 Product Description

The Taka ni Shiki-Natsu fountain pen is a masterpiece from Sailor and exclusively available at PenGallery. Also known as the Chinkin Hawk showcases the lifelike Chinkin-bori makie of a Japanese hawk being very active during the warm months of summer. First created in ebonite which is encased in durable urushi lacquer, the pen becomes more than a fountain pen. It transforms into a work of art with the addition of the Taka ni Shiki Natsu, executed flawlessly with the chinkin-bori maki-e technique. Indeed no error must occur during this process as the Hawk is directly carved into the urushi and the motif subsequently filled with precious gold leaf and dust.

Coming in as a very rare limited edition of 25 pieces, it is a wonderful work of Japanese artistry that will fit in stunningly into any valuable pen collection. As a bonus each work of art on the fountain pen is signed personally by the artist.

The box

Matching the astounding work of art on the pen is the box that it comes in. Like the pen, the box reflects the impeccable craftsmanship of the artist. Enveloped beautifully in urushi, the box is the perfect platform to showcase a larger, more impressive version of the Taka ni Shiki-Natsu in chinkin-bori maki-e. The chinkin-bori artwork on the box features well known Japanese elements and aesthetics in minute detail. With the box, we hope you are able to enjoy the pen even if is residing within it.

The artist

The artist for your precious fountain pen is Etsuko Tsuruta who is based in the city of Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. Kanazawa is well known to be the center of urushi and maki-e products throughout Japan. A member of the Association of Japan Traditional Art Crafts as well as the Technical Institute of Wajima Lacquer Art Craft, Etsuko had apprenticed under the late National Treasure Shogyo Oba, who also made his name as a master of maki-e lacquer ware in Ishikawa. Her much vaunted works are deemed to be extremely high quality and she has won several prizes at the National level including at the 1991 Ishikawa Prefecture exhibition of the Japan Traditional Art Crafts and at the 2000 Japan Traditional Art Crafts event. At the latter she won the Chief of the Cultural Affairs Agency prize.
