  1. A great day to day writing instrument

Posted by Cass on 12th Jan 2013

The Lamy Safari is a ball point pen that I keep coming back to, it has a combination of features that I appreciate.
It is a one-piece design, ie does not have a separate cap. Instead, the refill retracts.
The three cornered section near the tip of the pen locates my fingers well allowing a secure grip. The flare at the base of the grip holds my fingers in place. It is comfortably broad in the grip (I have a dislike for pens etc that are so narrow they slip through my fairly average sized hands). The weight is moderate. It feels neither distinctively light or heavy to me.
The clip is one of the best I have used. It slides easily over a shirt pocket, and is secure enough to stay there.
The refills are readily available, fit easily by removing the screw-in tip, and last a long time. I have had some fail when I drop them onto the non-slip (and possibly abrasive-impregnated) vinyl at work, but that is to be expected. Refills are available in 4 colours, and three line sizes (green in medium only).
The body work is robust, I have had no failures in decades of ownership of a few of these pens. I did lose a bellow covering the click button at the end, but was able to replace that as a spare part through a pen shop.
The colour options (and with the Al-Star range, material options), allow for an appearance which is likely to be distinct from colleagues or family members, so I know which pen is mine. It is possible to colour-coordinate ballpoint pens, fountain pens, roller pens and pencils from the range, a facility that I have taken advantage of. I chose red for my range of pens and pencils.
The price of the pen (and other items from the Safari range) is sufficient that I will care for it well, remember where I have put it (generally!), look for it if I have misplaced it, etc., but not so great that it will upset the family finances should I lose it.
Early versions of this pen that I owned had a black clip. More recently, Lamy have introduced silver clips. I have a preference for the black clips, which apparently are no longer available. Aesthetically, the silver element doesn't work for me on this pen. The black clip seemed to integrate with the black tip at one end, and the black rubber bellows at the other end. I hope Lamy will review that styling decision, or offer options.
On the Lamy website, this pen is included in the "Young Writing" section. I think it has broader appeal. Overall, I regard it as a good day to day ball point pen.
